I was born and raised near the small town of Dexter, Ks on a family farm. Being a country boy, I enjoyed the things our way of life brought: hunting, fishing, horses, and dogs. After finishing studies in Animal Science at KSU in 1987, I came home to join my Dad in the family livestock operation. I married my wife, Beth, in 1988, and we began our journey together of life and faith and discovering who Christ truly is. To help with our finances, I worked for a national feed company providing supplements and services to livestock producers in our region which put me in a pickup much of the day. Being raised in and around church, I assumed "in and around church" was what Christianity was: a weekly activity with not much daily surrender or conviction or power. Then, through a sequence of events, God began to truly reveal the person, work, and word of Jesus Christ in me. A weekend event where the grace of God and small group vulnerability among men wrecked my "John Wayne" thinking and stirred in me a longing for intimate, New Testament brotherhood. Shortly after, along with three men from our church I attended a Promise Keepers event in Boulder, CO. The three of us were challenged to the core in multiple areas which truly unveiled and began to unravel the hypocrisy of my "Christianity". For the first time in my life, I became a seeker of this Jesus Christ. If this was real, and now He was, then I was going to pursue Him that way. The next grace that God allowed, being in the truck most of the day, I had hours of time, so I got the Bible on cassette tape and began listening through scriptures over and over, and the Word of God began to attack my heart with its Truth. But I desperately needed sound biblical teaching (which I now know is line by line expository teaching). That's about the time, on a little AM station out of Tulsa, early in the morning, I discovered Dr. John MacArthur, and a group of men who faithfully expound the scriptures, and I realized that I had been dead in my sin...but the Holy Spirit had made me alive in Christ! I had been religious with no real relationship...and that same Holy Spirit had regenerated me. I was truly born again (John 3:5)...and Mike would never be the same (Romans 1:16-17)!!! Then through 20+ years of their teaching, studying and growing as a youth leader, serving as an elder at the church in Dexter, and consistently filling pulpits around our area, the Lord was developing a teaching gift that would ultimately find its fulfillment in being called to pastor here in Burden, Kansas, at First Baptist Church. Beth and I have been married since the Spring of 1988. We have four sons (two married with children, one single, and one with the Lord) and one daughter at home with us. Our journey together in Christ has been by His great grace and has truly become precious over these years. It has truly been and continues to be my privilege and great joy to follow the pattern of the men I learned from to teach and expound the Word of God. It's a blessing to continue to shepherd this beloved flock and guide their precious souls. "Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the children of God. Therefore, the world does not know us, because it did not know Him." - 1 John 3:1
